Songs You Should Know: The Rions

A lot has happened since we finished writing our debut album "Everything Every Single Day". Relationships that inspired songs that made it onto that album naturally evolved, more songs were written, and eventually we had more to say. The deluxe is a continuation of some of those songs, the second part of the narrative, which as a band, is important to us to tell. We wanted to write about the experience of finally letting love in, and how it feels to shed the fear of loss. We wanted to write about the evolution of overcoming loss, and the unique feelings of each stage, eventually becoming part of something bigger than yourself. I think ultimately, Everything Every Single Day (The Deluxe Edition) is about the perseverance of love."
John Waite - Missing You
A song I haven't shut up about for the past 6 months since re-discovering it. I'm not sure if I even heard it that often as a child, but there is just something about this song
that encapsulates everything that the 80's got right in music for me.
The 1975 - Happiness (Live)
Being Funny In a Foreign Language has been an incredibly influential album for us as artists since we started being fans of The 1975. I could choose any song off of that album, but recently i've been so in love with the intro piano progression they play in the live version, so I chose Happiness.
The Beatles - I’ve Got A Feeling
Another recent development has been diving back into my obsession with The Beatles, our first and biggest inspiration as a band. This version of I've got a feeling specifically is just so perfect.
Oliver Chatham - Get Down On Saturday Night
A relatively new discovery with this one, not much to say other than listening to it gets us absolutely pumped up for Saturday night. What a beautiful time of the week.
Geese - I See Myself
One of my personal favourite Geese songs that Tom and I recently had the privilege of hearing live at Laneway. It was everything we'd hoped it would be and more.
Dove Ellis - Love Is
Also another new artist I've been obsessed with thanks to a support slot for a Geese tour on the other side of the world I believe. Dove's music and voice is just the perfect blend of Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley to me.
Cameron Winter - Nausicaä (Love Will Be Revealed)
Lots of Geese related stuff here but no regrets about it. An album I could've picked a lot of songs from, but after seeing a cover of this on tik tok made by someone using some sort of garage band app, I realised how
crazy the harmonies and composition are.
Bruce Springsteen - I’m On Fire
Recently watched the Springsteen movie on the plane back from Perth and it nearly made me cry, incredible song, artist and movie.
Bob Dylan - Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
Bob Dylan has always been an intriguing artist for me, and from time to time I try an album of his, and after listening to Highway 61 Revisited, this one stood out to me a lot for some reason. I think maybe it's the snare.
Prince - I Would Die 4 U
Was on a massive Prince kick during the last UK tour and was flogging this song and Purple Rain (before the stranger things finale, yes I have receipts to prove it). An incredible song that in my opinion was way ahead of its time.
